If, however, we are prepared to reconstruct the University on a generous scale, that will be a clear indication to the local population, that we are not leaving Hong Kong for some years. Such action might help to stabilise the political situs- tion, in spite of our being unable to make an official pronouncement as to our future intentions.
We are informed
There is a further, broader consideration. that British prestige is rising among the democratic Chinese people, because they do not fear any imperialist move from us. A University, which served the Chinese as well as the Hong Kong population, at a time when professors and students in China are being arrested end imprisoned in thousands, because of their demonstrations against hunger and civil war, would be a valuable gesture in the cause of Anglo-Chinese relations. -
